Kenya’s Big 5 and Lakes Safari

Kenya’s Big 5 and Lakes Safari

Discover two of Kenya’s best safari destinations on the 8 Day Fly-In Safari. Explore two of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley Lakes (Naivasha and Nakuru), which provides a haven for plentiful wildlife. For the next 2 nights you will stay at Loldia House on the shore of Lake Naivasha. A visit to the nearby Lake Nakuru National Park is included in this trip.

While Nakuru is situated in a national park, private conservancies around Lake Naivasha offer the freedom to explore different safari experiences, like full-day nature walks and boat rides that takes you to the nearby crescent island. Travelers visiting the region will be treated to exceptional sightings of leopard, white rhino, Rothschild’s giraffe and an assortment of plains game.

Fly onward to Maasai Mara, which boasts some of the best viewing in Africa, from the migration herds that visit the plains each year. Your accommodation for the next 4 nights is at Elewana’s Sand River Mara Camp, set in a picturesque location and designed to salute the romantic heydays of safari during the 1920s. Your elegant, tented suite will have alluring views of the Sand River and deliver absolute privacy. Spot the Big 5 on twice-daily game drives and if you are visiting between July and November, you should have front-row seats to the Great Wildebeest Migration.

Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Lake Naivasha

Fly in to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where you are met and driven to Loldia House, on the shores of Lake Naivasha. The 2-hour trip offers some fine scenery as it winds through the beautiful Great Rift Valley. It eases you into a great adventure, beginning with a delicious lunch at the farm. Take in the view of the dormant volcano, Mount Longonot.

After your journey, spend the afternoon relaxing at Loldia House. Naivasha is surrounded by forests of acacia, the distinctive yellow-green fever tree. They are home to prolific bird life and the lake is a world-class birding destination.

There is other wildlife, too: giraffe, buffalo, monkey, and a large hippo population. Wild animals roam freely on the farm and while you dine on a delicious dinner, you may spot a hippo or two, scuffling and wallowing in the lake, or munching its dinner by the lakeside. And then it is off to bed after a fitting start to your safari.

Day 2: Lake Nakuru

An early breakfast starts your day at Loldia House, before a cracking adventure to Lake Nakuru National Park, setting of one of the world’s greatest avian spectacles: up to two million fuchsia flamingos carpeting the alkaline water of the soda lake.

The morning game drive around Nakuru boasts a variety of water birds, as well as other wildlife. The park is one of Kenya’s rhino sanctuaries and there are large numbers of these prized beasts. Also watch for leopard, hippos, Rothschild’s giraffe, buffalo and eland.

Your packed lunch is enjoyed under the acacia trees overlooking the lake, before you return to Loldia House for a leisurely rest. After another fine dinner in the shadow of Mount Longonot, it is time for bed. Tomorrow: the Masai Mara!

Day 3 – 7: Maasai Mara

This morning, you will board another short-haul flight into a remote part of the Masai Mara. Your accommodation for the next couple of nights is Sand River Masai Mara, nestled beneath a grove of shady trees in a gorgeous riverside setting. The Mara, Kenya’s flagship reserve, is most famous for the annual Wildebeest Migration and Sand River is perfectly located to witness this natural phenomenon between July and November. The herds naturally attract all the big cats, hyenas and wild dog, which makes for thrilling predator action. Nonetheless, the Mara offers excellent year-round game viewing, especially if you want to see the Big 5. A fascinating visit to a local Maasai village is also an activity not to be missed.

Day 8: Nairobi

After one last morning game drive and a breakfast picnic in the bush, you will catch a flight back to Wilson Airport, then transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward connection.
